Cua Tung Beach & Mui Treo Scenic Site

Located in the Vinh Linh region, Cua Tung Beach was once praised by the French in the early 20th century as the “Reine des plages” – the Queen of Beaches. Gently sloping to the point where the Ben Hai River meets the East Sea, Cua Tung enchants visitors with its fine white sands, sparkling blue waters, and refreshing coastal atmosphere. Two rocky headlands jutting deep into the ocean act as natural barriers against wind and waves, giving the beach a distinctive and picturesque landscape.

Just a short distance away lies Mui Treo, one of Quang Tri’s most breathtaking natural attractions. Here, verdant forests meet the vast sea, while sheer cliffs rise nearly 40 meters above the waves. From the summit, travelers can gaze endlessly across the horizon, while behind them stretches the rare Ru Linh primeval forest – home to plant species unique to the sandy coastal belt of Central Vietnam.

The romantic charm of Cua Tung Beach combined with the majestic grandeur of Mui Treo’s cliffs creates a coastal sightseeing route unlike any other. Visitors can indulge in upscale picnics beneath coastal trees, watch the fiery sunset paint the basalt cliffs in crimson hues, and savor freshly caught seafood brought in by local fishermen straight from the open sea.

Hien Luong – Ben Hai Banks: A Special National Relic

Situated along National Highway 1A at the meeting point of Ben Hai and Cua Tung communes, the Hien Luong – Ben Hai River banks stand as a Special National Relic of immense historical and cultural significance. Following the 1954 Geneva Accords, the Ben Hai River – spanned by the Hien Luong Bridge at the 17th Parallel – was marked as the temporary military demarcation line. More than a simple crossing, the bridge became a poignant symbol of national division and the deep yearning for reunification. These riverbanks bore witness to struggles across military, political, diplomatic, cultural, and ideological fronts.

Today, the relic complex preserves numerous historic structures: the restored Hien Luong Bridge with its contrasting blue and yellow spans symbolizing unity; the towering Hien Luong Flagpole, site of fierce “flag battles”; the flag tower; the Joint Commission House; the loudspeaker cluster; the Demarcation Line Police Station; the Hien Luong – Ben Hai Museum; and the “Aspiration for National Reunification” monument complex. Each element tells a vivid story of resilience and determination, recreating a unique chapter in Vietnam’s history.

Walking across this historic bridge and hearing accounts of the steadfast resolve of soldiers and civilians on both banks, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the strength and longing for peace that define the Vietnamese spirit. It remains a proud, poignant landmark – adding cultural depth and emotional resonance to every journey through Quảng Trị.

Quang Tri Ancient Citadel

The Quang Tri Ancient Citadel is a site of extraordinary historical value, standing as a powerful symbol of the Vietnamese people’s struggle for independence, reunification, and their enduring aspiration for peace. Originally constructed in 1809 under King Gia Long and completed in 1827 during King Minh Mang’s reign, the brick fortress served as the political, military, and administrative center of Quang Tri Province throughout the feudal era. Its place in national history was forever sealed during the fierce 81-day-and-night battle of the summer of 1972, when soldiers and civilians fought with unyielding determination to defend the citadel.

Today, the grounds have been carefully preserved and enriched with commemorative features: a memorial monument, an exhibition hall, and remnants of fortifications and wartime relics. The memorial’s 8.1-meter votive lamp symbolizes the 81 days of heroic combat, while the exhibition hall displays images, documents, and artifacts that bring the 1972 conflict vividly to life. Nearby, the tranquil Thach Han River flows through the town, regarded as a sacred waterway forever tied to the sacrifices and valor of past generations.

As the sun sets, releasing glowing lanterns onto the Thach Han River becomes a moment of quiet reflection – an act of reverence that deepens the spiritual atmosphere of the citadel. Together, the solemn grounds and the sacred river embody resilience, gratitude, and the timeless message of peace, making the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel not only a historical landmark but also a source of spiritual strength for all who visit.

Khe Sanh

Rising between 600 and over 1,000 meters above sea level within the majestic Truong Son (Annamite) Range, Khe Sanh is blessed with a cool, misty subtropical climate all year round. It represents the distinctive natural beauty of western Quảng Trị and holds exceptional historical, cultural, ecological, and tourism value.

Khe Sanh is renowned for its pivotal role in Vietnam’s struggle for liberation, particularly during the resistance war against the United States. This strategic stronghold was central to the 1968 Route 9 – Khe Sanh Campaign and numerous decisive military events along Route 9. Historic landmarks such as Tà Cơn Airfield, Làng Vây, and Route 9 itself have become enduring symbols of the region’s character and resilience.

The plateau’s terrain is a dramatic interplay of deep valleys, vast basalt hills, and the winding Sa Mù Pass, often veiled in ethereal clouds. Visitors can “hunt clouds” at dawn, admire sweeping wind farms atop the mountains, and explore sprawling coffee plantations, lush forests, and rugged ranges that define western Quảng Trị. Khe Sanh coffee, increasingly recognized as a local specialty, has paved the way for agritourism, coffee-region experiences, and community-based ecotourism.

Beyond its landscapes, Khe Sanh preserves the cultural heritage of the Bru-Vân Kiều and Pa Cô ethnic groups, expressed through gong music and distinctive stilt-house architecture. A journey to Khe Sanh offers a rich “mountains-to-sea” experience, where travelers can immerse themselves in pristine wilderness while connecting with history, culture, and the spirit of the Truong Son.

Must-Try Specialties

Bo Chinh Ginseng

First discovered some 300 years ago in the Bo Chinh region (today part of Bo Trach District, Quảng Bình Province), Bo Chinh Ginseng is a treasured medicinal herb deeply woven into the tradition of Vietnamese herbal medicine. During the Nguyễn Dynasty, it was considered a premium tribute to the royal court and was recorded by the famed physician Hải Thượng Lãn Ông Lê Hữu Trác in classical medical texts for its ability to strengthen Qi and blood, nourish Yin, and promote fluid production.

The ginseng root is rich in saponins, mucilage, and trace compounds, offering a naturally cooling effect with a delicate sweetness. In modern gastronomy, chefs elevate Bo Chinh Ginseng into refined creations such as herbal chicken soup, bird’s nest stewed with ginseng, nourishing pigeon porridge, and elegant premium ginseng teas.

For golfers enduring long rounds under the tropical sun, dishes and beverages infused with Bo Chinh Ginseng provide a natural way to restore vitality, stabilize blood pressure, and sustainably replenish energy. This fusion of tradition and modern wellness makes Bo Chinh Ginseng not only a cultural treasure but also a contemporary symbol of healthy living.

Khe Sanh Coffee

Introduced by the French in the early 20th century and nurtured in the fertile red basalt soils of Hương Hóa District, Khe Sanh Arabica coffee thrives at altitudes above 600 meters. The dramatic day–night temperature shifts and the misty climate of the Truong Son Range allow the beans to develop a distinctive sweetness and layered aroma, meeting the rigorous standards of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).

Khe Sanh specialty coffee is celebrated for its refined tropical fruit notes, crisp natural acidity reminiscent of ripe fruit, and a lingering sweetness with subtle hints of honey and forest wood. Each bean is handpicked at full ripeness and processed through natural fermentation methods, preserving its authentic character and pristine flavor profile.

Whether enjoyed as a pour-over or an espresso, a cup of Khe Sanh coffee is the perfect start to the day. For golfers, it awakens the senses, sharpens focus, and enhances precision – providing the energy and clarity needed for every swing on the course.

“Jumping Squid” (Mực Nhảy)

The pristine waters off Nhat Le and Quang Phu – renowned for their ideal salinity and clarity – produce some of the finest squid in Central Vietnam. The name “jumping squid” (mực nháy) comes from their state immediately after being caught at night: their translucent bodies shimmer as tiny pigment spots pulse with bioluminescent light, sparkling like stars from the deep sea.

To savor their unmatched freshness, these squid are often served as delicate sashimi with wasabi and soy sauce, or steamed whole with ginger and wild betel leaves, paired with a salt-chili-lime dipping sauce. Each bite delivers a crisp texture and natural sweetness, free from any fishy aftertaste.

Nhat Le’s “jumping squid” is not only a culinary delight but also a nutritional treasure – rich in protein, low in fat, and abundant in marine minerals. Enjoying freshly prepared squid with a glass of white wine at seaside restaurants in Bao Ninh offers a refined, luxurious dining experience – an essential indulgence after a round of golf on the fairways.

Gianh River Blood Cockles

Before reaching the sea, the historic Gianh River forms a vast brackish lagoon with a fertile mud-and-sand ecosystem. In its lower reaches thrive wild blood cockles, distinguished by thick, ridged shells, plump flesh, and a dark red fluid rich in iron and nutrients.

The finest way to enjoy Gianh River blood cockles is to grill them simply over charcoal until just cooked, preserving their succulence and nutty-sweet juices. Other beloved preparations include cockles stir-fried with tamarind sauce, lime-marinated cockles with wild herbs, and cockles sautéed with garlic and chili – each offering bold, vibrant flavors that awaken the palate.

Celebrated for their blood-nourishing and cooling properties, as well as their ability to provide abundant energy, Gianh River blood cockles are a prized seafood delicacy of Central Vietnam. Sharing a fragrant plate of these cockles by the breezy seaside is not only refreshing but also a delightful way to bond after a round of golf.

Grilled Chicken With Phong Nha “Cheo” Salt

Raised naturally on the limestone slopes of Bố Trạch, free-range hill chickens feed on corn, rice, and wild insects, giving their meat a firm texture, thin skin, and a sweet, aromatic flavor. The dish’s soul lies in cheo salt – a distinctive dipping condiment of the Bru-Vân Kiều ethnic community. Made by pounding together dry-roasted coarse salt, wild green chilies, fragrant é leaves (a basil variety), and forest peppercorns, muối cheo delivers a bold, refreshing kick.

After cleaning, the chicken is flattened, secured between fresh bamboo slats, and slow-roasted over glowing charcoal until the skin turns golden brown, the fat sizzles, and the aroma becomes irresistible. Tearing off a piece of the piping-hot chicken and dipping it into cheo salt creates a sublime harmony: the savory sweetness of the meat, the fiery heat of wild chilies, and the cool fragrance of forest herbs.

Enjoying muối cheo grilled chicken beside a babbling stream or amid the limestone valleys of Phong Nha evokes a sense of freedom and authenticity. It is a memorable outdoor culinary experience – one that restores energy after cave explorations or a round of golf in Central Vietnam.
