Must-Visit Destinations

Hung Temple National Special Historical Site

The Hung Temple Historical Site, recognized as a special national relic, stands as one of Phu Tho Province’s most significant cultural and spiritual destinations. It is dedicated to the Hung Kings, founders of the Van Lang Kingdom – the very first state of the Vietnamese people. With a legacy stretching back thousands of years, the site embodies the nation’s spiritual traditions, cultural beliefs, and enduring gratitude for the Hung Kings’ role in shaping Vietnam’s identity and unity.

The Hung Temple complex is an ensemble of relics, including the Temple Gate, Lower Temple, Thien Quang Pagoda, Middle Temple, Upper Temple, Hung King’s Mausoleum, Well Temple, Temple of Ancestral Mother Au Co, and Temple of National Ancestor Lac Long Quan.

Among these, the Temple of Ancestral Mother Au Co is especially revered for its association with the legend of Mother Au Co – the symbolic origin of the Vietnamese nation. After her ascension to heaven, a shrine was erected, and in the 15th century, King Le Thanh Tong issued a royal decree to build the grand temple that still stands today.

As a famous Vietnamese saying goes, “No matter where one goes, remember the Ancestor’s Commemoration Day on the tenth day of the third lunar month.” Each year, from the sixth to the tenth day of the third lunar month, the Hung Kings Commemoration Day (the Hung Temple Festival) is celebrated as travelers from across Vietnam gather to pay homage to their ancestors, honoring the Hung Kings and other forefathers who laid the foundations of the nation. More than a festival, it is a spiritual force that unites the Vietnamese people, reinforcing their national identity.

Phú Thọ Ear-Shaped Cake

Ear-shaped cakes, known in the past as Hòn Tai cakes, have a long history in Phú Thọ. Originally shaped like clams, they later evolved into a longer, thinner form curved like an ear, hence their current name.

Made from sticky white rice flour, the cakes have a soft, opaque exterior and a savory filling of minced lean meat, fat, dried onions, and pepper. Steamed until tender, they are served with a spicy dipping sauce. Each bite reveals a fragrant blend of rice flour and rich meat filling, with a chewy yet refreshing texture. The small amount of fat in the filling ensures the cakes remain moist and flavorful without sticking together.

Traditionally, ear-shaped cakes were prepared only during holidays and festivals due to the laborious process. Today, thanks to modern machinery, they can be produced more quickly and in larger quantities, making them widely available and affordable. They are enjoyed as breakfast, snacks, quick meals while traveling, and event at weddings and conferences.

These cakes are popular gifts for those living far from home, especially abroad, as they always retain their authentic flavor.
